One of the biggest myths about language learning is that you need expensive courses, tutors, or subscriptions to start.
You don’t.
You can make huge progress in Italian for free if you focus on the right things.
Here are my favourite free ways to learn Italian:
🎵 Italian music
Music helps with pronunciation, rhythm, and memory without feeling like studying.
Some great artists to start with:
- Annalisa
- Angelina Mango
- Joan Thiele
Listen casually first. Then go back and read the lyrics later.
📚 Children’s books from your local library
Children’s books use simpler sentence structures and repetitive vocabulary, which is exactly what beginners need.
And because the stories are visual, your brain can guess meaning from context.
🎧 Podcasts
Even if you don’t understand everything, your listening improves massively through exposure.
I recommend:
- SBS Italian
- Joy of Languages
- Elisa True Crime
🎬 Dual subtitles on Netflix or YouTube
Watching with both English and Italian subtitles can genuinely change the game for comprehension.
You start connecting:
- the sound
- the spelling
- the meaning
all at the same time.
The mistake most beginners make
Most people try to learn everything.
But the fastest learners focus on the words that appear constantly in everyday conversation.
In fact, the most common words cover a huge percentage of daily Italian.
That’s why I created my Italian bundle around the most common 2000 Italian words first — so you stop wasting time on random vocabulary you’ll barely hear.
It’s designed to help beginners understand Italian faster through the words natives actually use.
